Your Privacy Matters
Memoires is a personal journal app. Your memories are yours. Your entries, photos, and location tags are stored on your device and are never sold, shared, or used for advertising. This page explains exactly what stays on your device, what leaves it, and what you can turn off.
What Stays on Your Device
On-Device Storage
All journal entries, photos, drawings, mood data, and location tags are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly enable iCloud Sync.
iCloud Sync (Optional)
If you enable iCloud Sync, your data is stored in your personal iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit private database, and synced between your own devices through your Apple ID. Memoires cannot read it.
Your iCloud data is encrypted in transit and at rest. However, unless you have enabled Apple's Advanced Data Protection, Apple holds the encryption keys. Memoires does not offer end-to-end encryption, and we want to be straightforward about that.
App Lock
If you enable App Lock, Memoires requires Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode to open. Authentication is handled entirely by iOS. Your biometric data never leaves Apple's Secure Enclave and is never accessible to Memoires.
Exporting an Entry
You can export a single entry as a PDF or as plain text. The file is created on your device and handed to the standard iOS share sheet. Nothing is sent to us, and the export never passes through our servers. Once you share the file, where it goes is between you and whichever app or person you send it to.
What Leaves Your Device
Refine with AI (Premium)
This is the only feature that sends your journal text off your device, and it only happens when you explicitly tap Refine with AI on a specific entry.
When you do, the text of that one entry is sent over an encrypted connection to our processing service, and from there to OpenAI, which returns a cleaned-up version. Specifically:
- Only the text of the entry you are refining is sent. No other entries, photos, locations, or titles.
- The request includes an anonymous subscriber identifier, so we can confirm your subscription and apply daily usage limits. It is not your name, email, or Apple ID.
- We do not store the text of your entry on our servers. We do keep a count of how many times the feature has been used, linked to that anonymous identifier, to enforce those limits.
- Under OpenAI's API data usage policies, text submitted through their API is not used to train their models. OpenAI may retain it for a limited period for abuse monitoring, under their own privacy policy.
If you never tap the button, your journal text never leaves your device.
Voice Dictation
Dictation is processed on your device whenever the language you have selected supports on-device recognition, which is the case for most supported languages.
For languages without on-device support, iOS sends the audio to Apple's speech-recognition service for transcription, under Apple's privacy policy. Memoires never receives, records, or stores the audio itself — only the text that comes back. You can see and change which language is used in Settings and in the editor.
Anonymous Usage Statistics
We use TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service, to understand how Memoires is used — which screens are opened, whether a feature was used, roughly how long a dictation ran.
- These events never include your journal text, entry titles, place names, or coordinates. Only counts, yes/no flags, and rough ranges.
- TelemetryDeck uses a hashed identifier that cannot be traced back to you or followed across other apps.
- Nothing here is used for advertising, and we do not track you across apps or websites.
- You can turn this off entirely in Settings → Privacy and security → Analytics → Share anonymous usage.
Subscriptions
Subscriptions are processed by Apple. We use RevenueCat to manage them, which receives your purchase receipts, subscription status, and an anonymous app user ID. RevenueCat has no access to your journal entries, photos, or location data. We never see your payment details.
Device Integrity
To stop our AI service being abused, Memoires uses Apple's App Attest to confirm requests come from a genuine, unmodified copy of the app. This exchanges a cryptographic token with Apple and our server. It contains no personal information and cannot identify you.
Permissions We Request
Microphone & Speech Recognition
Used for voice dictation. See Voice Dictation above for exactly where the audio goes.
Photo Library
Used to attach photos to entries, and to look for unlogged trips and events so we can suggest writing about them. This scanning runs entirely on your device, including when it runs in the background, and thumbnail copies are stored locally. Your photos are never uploaded to us or to anyone else.
Camera
Used to take photos directly within the app. They are stored locally on your device.
Location
Used to auto-tag where an entry took place. Location is stored only inside that entry on your device. We do not track your location in the background and never transmit it to any server.
Face ID
Used only to unlock the app when you have enabled App Lock. See App Lock above.
Notifications
Used for optional daily journaling reminders, and to tell you when a background scan has found photos worth writing about. Notifications are scheduled locally on your device. Memoires does not use push notifications and sends nothing to a server to deliver them.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not display advertisements, and no data is ever used for advertising.
- We do not sell, share, or trade your personal data with anyone.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not build behavioural profiles about you.
- We do not upload your photos, locations, or entries — apart from the single case of Refine with AI, described above, which you trigger yourself.
This Website
memoires.app uses Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics tool, to count page visits. It sets no cookies, collects no personal data, and does not track visitors across sites.
Data Retention
Your entries stay on your device — and in your personal iCloud account if sync is enabled — until you delete them. Archiving a memory is not deleting it: the entry is hidden from your timeline but kept, and you can read, restore, or delete it under Settings → Archive. Deleting a memory removes it permanently. Uninstalling the app removes all local data. To remove synced data, delete the app's data from your iCloud settings.
Children's Privacy
Memoires is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. We encourage you to review it periodically.
